Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died Friday after feeling ill and losing consciousness following a trip to a penal colony, the country's prison administration said.

He was 47 years old. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters today that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been informed of his death and that prison doctors were working to determine the cause of death.
