4.8 magnitude earthquake recorded in New Jersey | East Coast Shaken by Earthquake and Aftershocks

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake recorded in New Jersey shook residents across surrounding states and New York City on Friday morning, marking one of the strongest seismic events in the state's history.

The earthquake struck approximately 5 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, around 10:23 a.m. on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was situated about 45 miles from New York City, where residents experienced furniture and floors shaking.

"Earthquakes in this region are infrequent but not unexpected. People near the epicenter may feel aftershocks in the magnitude 2-3 range, and there is a slight possibility of another earthquake of similar or greater magnitude following this event," explained Paul Earle, a seismologist with the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program. "From our perspective, this is a standard earthquake occurrence... We anticipated that this event would be of significant interest to those who do not frequently experience earthquakes."

Reports indicate that the tremors were felt as far north as Maine and as far south as Norfolk, Virginia. USGS scientists advised individuals in the affected area to heed local emergency instructions and be prepared to take cover in the event of aftershocks.

"If you feel shaking, remember to drop, cover, and hold," Earle advised.

As of now, no major disruptions or damages have been reported in New Jersey or New York.

"We have activated our State Emergency Operations Center. Please refrain from calling 911 unless you have a genuine emergency," stated New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.

President Joe Biden has spoken with Governor Murphy about the earthquake, and the White House is closely monitoring the situation.

"He believes that everything is under control," Biden informed reporters before departing for Baltimore from the White House. "The governor of New Jersey doesn't seem too concerned, so things appear to be okay."

Governor Kathy Hochul of New York confirmed that the earthquake was felt throughout the state, and officials are evaluating any potential impacts or damages.

In Yonkers, New York, Mayor Mike Spano reported that City Hall experienced shaking, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

"A short while ago, our entire house shook for approximately 25 seconds here in Mendham, New Jersey," remarked former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

The USGS is actively investigating the specific fault line responsible for Friday's earthquake and noted that the area features numerous fault lines that were more active millions of years ago.
