In an important move for regional diplomacy, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, spoke by phone with Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi. Both leaders agreed to improve their diplomatic relationship by raising it to the level of ambassadors.
This conversation happened soon after Pakistan officially announced that it would now have an ambassador at its embassy in Kabul. Just two days earlier, Senator Ishaq Dar shared Pakistan’s decision to appoint an ambassador, upgrading from the previous lower diplomatic level. In response, the Afghan government also upgraded its representative in Islamabad from a Chargé d’Affaires to an ambassador.
A spokesperson from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the exchange. He said that Amir Khan Muttaqi welcomed the decision and hoped it would help both countries build a better understanding. He also called the change a positive step toward stronger relations.
The two ministers also talked about earlier promises made during their April 19 meeting. They agreed it is important to keep working together to make sure those decisions are fully carried out. Both sides highlighted the need for regular communication and trust-building.
Focus on Regional Connectivity and UAP Railway Project
Another key topic was the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (UAP) Railway Project. Both leaders agreed this project is very important for improving trade and connecting the region. They promised to speed up work on a framework agreement that would help complete the project sooner. The railway is expected to bring economic benefits to Central and South Asia.
Commitment to Peace and Cooperation
This development shows that both Pakistan and Afghanistan are committed to having stable and respectful relations. Even with a complicated past, both countries are now working toward peace, better ties, and regional cooperation. The leaders’ phone call proves that diplomacy can help bring countries closer and support shared progress.
