Colombian pop star Shakira has shared her honest feelings about life as an immigrant in the United States. She spoke out during a time when immigration policies were becoming stricter under President Donald Trump.
The 48-year-old singer moved to Miami, Florida, in 2023 with her two sons after ending her relationship with Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué. Since then, she has been adjusting to her new life in the US.
In an interview with a British news outlet, Shakira talked about her past and present experiences. She said, “I was only 19 when I moved to the US, like many other Colombian immigrants who come to this country looking for a better future.”
When asked how it feels to be an immigrant in the US now, Shakira responded, “It means living in constant fear. And it’s painful to see.”
She added, “Now, more than ever, we must stay united. Now, more than ever, we need to speak up and say clearly that even if immigration laws change, the way people are treated must always be kind and humane.”
Shakira is currently touring with her ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’ (Women No Longer Cry) world tour, named after her twelfth studio album. Her message about unity and respect comes at a time when many immigrants are facing tough situations.
