In a 90-minute phone call, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump agreed to initiate trade negotiations as both leaders discussed ways to ease ongoing trade tensions.
Xi Jinping’s Views on Bilateral Relations
President Xi emphasized the importance of maintaining a steady and clear direction in the complex relationship between Beijing and Washington. He compared the relationship to steering a massive vessel, requiring careful navigation to avoid distractions and disruptions.
Xi mentioned that after an American proposal, Chinese and US officials recently met in Geneva to discuss economic and trade matters. He termed the meeting as a constructive move toward resolving issues through open dialogue. Xi reaffirmed China’s belief that cooperation based on mutual respect and equality is the only productive path forward.
China remains committed to fulfilling its responsibilities under the Geneva agreement while standing firm on its core principles. Xi urged President Trump to acknowledge the progress China has made and to reconsider certain punitive actions.
Strengthening communication across key sectors—such as diplomacy, trade, military, and law enforcement—would help eliminate misunderstandings and further support collaboration between the two nations.
Taiwan Issue and Tensions
President Xi further addressed the Taiwan issue, warning that the US should act cautiously to prevent pro-independence elements from escalating tensions and pushing both countries toward conflict.
Donald Trump’s Response and Commitment to Cooperation
In response, President Donald Trump expressed admiration for Xi and reaffirmed the significance of a strong US-China relationship. He voiced support for China’s economic success and emphasized that the two nations can accomplish much through cooperation.
Trump also reiterated America’s adherence to the One-China policy and described the Geneva talks as productive. He pledged to work with China on implementing the agreement and welcomed continued academic exchange, particularly the presence of Chinese students in the U.S.
Additionally, President Xi extended an invitation for President Trump to visit China again, which Trump warmly welcomed. Both leaders agreed to have their teams continue executing the Geneva agreement and plan the next round of discussions soon.
