Singapore hangs first woman in 19 years

She was convicted of trafficking 31 grams of heroin

Singapore hangs first woman in 19 years

According to the news agency "Associated Press", this is the second execution for drug trafficking this week, despite calls to abolish the death penalty for drug-related crimes in Singapore.

The Central Narcotics Bureau has said that 45-year-old Sridevi Djamani, who was sentenced to death in 2018 for smuggling about 31 grams of diamorphine or pure heroin, was executed today.

The bureau said in its statement that the required amount is enough to get 370 drug addicts drunk for a week.

Under Singapore law, anyone convicted of trafficking more than 500 grams of cannabis and 15 grams of heroin is punishable by death.

Two days before Sridevi Djamani's execution, 56-year-old Muhammad Aziz Hussain from Singapore was sentenced to death for smuggling 50 grams of heroin.

The Narcotics Bureau says the two inmates were put through a process that included appeals of their convictions and sentences and requests for presidential pardons.

Singapore has been urged by human rights groups, international activists, and the United Nations to end the death penalty for drug offenses.

Human rights activists say another prisoner may be hanged in Singapore next week.

According to rights activists, the death penalty is ineffective in curbing drug use. However, Singaporean authorities maintain that the death penalty is necessary to curb the supply and demand for drugs.

Since the death penalty was reinstated in March 2022, 15 people have been executed for drug offenses in Singapore, according to human rights groups. That is, on average, one person was executed every month.

Activists against the death penalty say the last woman known to have been executed in Singapore was 36-year-old hairdresser Yin May Wooen, who was hanged in 2004 for drug trafficking.

The Transformative Justice Collective, a Singaporean group that supports the abolition of the death penalty, says another inmate has been given an August 3 notice to be executed.
