Cipher Case Demands Serious Inquiry, Affirms Bilawal

Cypher Case Demands Serious Inquiry, Affirms Bilawal

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari emphasized the gravity of the "cipher case" against former Prime Minister Imran Khan, describing it as a "major national security breach" that demands a thorough investigation. Speaking to the media in Larkana after submitting his nomination papers, Bilawal stated that while he does not support political retribution, the cipher case is a serious issue that needs attention.

Bilawal expressed concern about the apparent leniency Imran Khan was receiving in the case. The cipher case revolves around a diplomatic document that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) alleges was not returned by Imran Khan, with the document reportedly containing a threat from the United States to oust him as prime minister.

On Friday, the Supreme Court granted bail to Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in connection with the cipher case. Bilawal drew a parallel with former US President Donald Trump's indictment over handling classified documents, stressing the importance of investigating such matters to safeguard national security.

Highlighting the sensitivity of classified documents, Bilawal, drawing on his experience as a foreign minister, explained that ciphers typically have limited copies, with one for the foreign minister, one for the prime minister, and sometimes for security agencies if required. He raised concerns about the missing prime minister's copy in this case and emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation.

Bilawal urged the government to pursue a thorough inquiry and suggested a judicial inquiry to ascertain the facts of the cipher case. Addressing questions about a potential alliance with the PTI, Bilawal asserted that the PPP would contest the February 8 general election based on its own strength, emphasizing the party's commitment to democracy and political cooperation. Bilawal submitted nomination papers from Larkana, Lahore, and Qambar Shahdadkot, underscoring the PPP's full participation in addressing the country's current challenges.
