US Vice President JD Vance raised concerns about the possibility of increasing tensions in South Asia after a deadly attack in Indian-held Kashmir. He called for India to respond carefully to avoid a larger conflict.
The April 22 attack in Pahalgam resulted in the deaths of 26 people, mostly tourists, making it one of the worst incidents in the region in over two decades. India has suggested that the attack might involve cross-border elements but has not provided strong evidence. In response, Pakistan has firmly denied these allegations and called for an independent international investigation.
On Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier, Vice President Vance stated, “We hope India responds in a way that does not lead to a broader regional crisis.” He also urged Pakistan to help identify and eliminate terrorist organizations based in its territory if any involvement is proven.
Top U.S. officials, including President Trump, have condemned the attack and expressed support for India, although no direct blame has been placed on Pakistan. The Biden administration sees India as an important ally in the effort against China’s growing influence. Meanwhile, Pakistan still holds ally status but has lost geopolitical significance since the 2021 U.S. pullout from Afghanistan.
The U.S. has consistently urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and communicate to resolve the crisis peacefully. The U.S. State Department confirmed that diplomatic efforts are ongoing. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently met with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised accountability for those responsible for the attack, while Foreign Minister Jaishankar called for swift justice during talks with Secretary Rubio. On the other hand, Islamabad has warned that Indian military action could be imminent and still refuses to accept a neutral investigation.
Tensions have escalated with India suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and both countries restricting airspace access to each other’s airlines. There have also been reports of cross-border fighting.
